DraftKings SportsBook is Live in New Jersey

The DraftKings sportsbook app has been promised for months, and one Wednesday it officially hit in the Apple and Google Play store. With William Hill already opening sportsbooks in several states with as many as 14 more planned in the coming weeks, there is clearly going to be a major push this football season.

Given the size of the player pool at both FanDuel and DraftKings, it stands to reason that the two kings of daily fantasy may end up playing a pivotal role in the coming sportsbook boom. This should be particularly true for both mobile and in-game betting.

First Looks at the DraftKings Sports Betting App

For us, having covered sports betting for the past decade here in the states, it is particularly exciting to see how these new sportsbooks are going look and function. After getting a brief tour of the app, we can say that it is already one of the more polished mobile sportsbooks we have ever tested.

While DraftKings has the basics covered with spread, total, moneyline, etc… they are looking to step up in game betting which has been a growing trend in the industry over the past few years.

According to DraftKings, they see this as a way to keep users engaged in contests, regardless of the score. For our users unfamiliar with in game betting, it works similar to in game fantasy products like Boom Fantasy, but instead of picking players against players you are picking totals, what happens on the next play, what team scores next, what player scores next, etc…

In-Play Betting Format: What You Need to Know

Perhaps the most interesting feature we saw with the app was the use of in-play format for every single bet. You can cash out your bet at any time, at various payouts that are based on the current status of the bet.

For instance, if you took the Giants +3 and they are up 4 in the third quarter, you will be able to cash out that bet early for a slightly smaller payout. This format is used on the DraftKings sportsbook for every bet, and I believe it’s the first time we have ever seen this done.

Innovations like these are exactly what have us and so many other users excited for what effect opening up the US market will have on the sports betting industry. DraftKings has clearly already raised the bar leaps and bounds from where it was just a few months ago.

Who is Eligible to Use DraftKings SportsBook?

Obviously this will be the multi-million dollar question moving forward. Not only is their going to be a major push to get these sportsbooks developed and available to the public, but there is going to be an even bigger push to get legislation passed in as many states as possible.

DraftKings is currently only operating in New Jersey, but undoubtedly will expand as quickly as possible. New bills are being moved through several states as we write this, and the list of eligible states could grow by the day in the coming weeks.

According to Bloomberg, the move is expected to generate nearly $300 million in revenue for the state of New Jersey. If that is the case you can certainly expect more states to follow suit and chase the payout.

For now, when users download the app they will be asked to verify their location. Users outside of New Jersey will be automatically added to a waiting list for the state that they are in. Users in New Jersey will be allowed to use the app immediately. Here is the official statement regarding this from DK:

Register your interest by downloading the DraftKings Sportsbook app from the Apple store or download the Android app and wait for your invite. The number of customers allowed on DraftKings Sportsbook during this invite only period, as well as the hours of operation, is limited per the rules set forth by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement.

According to New Jersey, mobile products like DraftKings sportsbook have to be partnered with a casino that operates in the state. For DraftKings, that partner is Atlantic City’s Resort Casino Hotel, working together the two were able to get permission from NJ to do a soft launch this August.

With the first domino down in what is sure to be an intense mobile sportsbook push this football season, you will want to stay tuned for the latest news every day. Bookmark our US sportsbook page for all of the breaking new.
