Our 2016 DraftKings British Open Picks
Fantasy golf is one of the more analytical fantasy sports DraftKings offers, and when you throw in a links course and iffy weather things get really difficult. You can make an argument for any of the top players: Jordan is the grittiest player on the planet and will handle the wind as well as anyone, Jason Day is the best golfer on the planet and is unbeatable when he’s locked in, DJ is the hottest golfer on the planet, Rory won The Open two years ago and is due, Adam Scott is top 10 here every year… The problem is you can only really roster one of these guys, so how do you fill out the rest of your roster?
Our focus coming in was finding quality links players that have a legitimate shot to contend this week in the $7,000 – $8,000 range. We ended up with 5 names that we feel great about, and think you can plug into your lineups this week and have as good of a top 20 shot as anyone outside of that top 5 over $10,000.
DraftKings Salary – $11,900
We are betting on Rory this week… Even with as well as DJ has been driving the ball recently, Rory is still #1 on the tour in shots gained off the tee. As we mentioned earlier, he won here in 2014 and his form is solid coming in with 5 top 12 finishes in his last 6 outings including for top 4’s. Given his recent majors drought, we expect Scott, Spieth, and Day to have higher ownership percentages this week making Rory our choice out of that group. For what it’s worth, we have Day in the majority of our non-Rory lineups this week.
DraftKings Salary – $8,800
Shane Lowry is the safest pick in the $8,000-$9,000 range. He just finished T2 in the US Open, and is as good of a links and bad-weather golfer as there is in this tournament. He finished 9th here in 2014 and 9th at the impossible links-like Chambers Bay last season. He’s a mudder, and that’s what it will take to win here this week.
DraftKings Salary – $7,800
Schwartzel is another player that fits this course really well. He finished T7 at the 2014 Open, T15 at the 2013 Open, and finished 7th at the 2015 US Open at Chambers Bay which again played like a links course. He’s in great form with 14/15 cuts made, 3 wins, ad 6 top 10’s this season. His short game stats have been off the charts this season and he currently ranks in the top 50 for many of the key stats for this tournament.
DraftKings Salary – $7,600
Again, we are targeting the best links players in this tournament and Knox certainly qualifies as one. He’s top 20 on the European tour with only 9 appearances. He finished second at The Heritage, second at the Irish open, and T10 at the Scottish Open last week. On the season he has made 17 of 22 cuts with 5 top 10’s, but, again, we like him more this week than most.
DraftKings Salary – $7,200
The 29 year old Sullivan finished T30 in his first shot at The Open last season, and has back-to-back top 6 finishes coming into this year’s tournament. He’s currently the number 36 player in the world, and is another European player with plenty of links experience. He’s not going jump off the page statistically, but is a top 50 putter and approach player on the PGA and in the top 30 in GIR on the European.
DraftKings Salary – $7,000
Molinari is in great form coming into the 2016 Open. He has made 9 of 10 cuts with 4 top 10’s over that stretch. Over the last three Opens, Molinari has a T40, T7, and T9. He also finished T27 in last year’s US Open, and has one of the best links games on the planet. Statistically, Molinari is currently 17th in strokes gained tee-to-green, 17th in approach, and 39th in around the green. He will need to putt to make it 3 top 10 finishes in 4 years, but has the accuracy to score on Royal Troon.
DraftKings Salary – $6,900
As I pulled up similar courses Cabrera-Bello was one of the names that kept popping up. He finished T40 here last year, and T21 in 2014. He has 5 top 10’s in 15 starts and a top 20 at The Masters, Spanish Open, Irish Open, and Open de France. Despite having top-20 odds on many sportbooks, he’s just the 36th highest priced golfer on DraftKings this week. He’s top 10 in GIR and stroke average on the European Tour this season, and is a nice value/sleeper pick at under $7k.
DraftKings Salary – $5,800
Every time we write a golf article we leave out a punt play, because we rarely punt with our golf lineups… It’s too risky, you just can’t have a player miss the cut. However, without fail, we get dozens of comments requesting a punt play under $6,000. So, here it is. We think Lombard is the best punt play for The Open. Another golfer who has a game that fits Royal Troon, Lombard is only 21, but just finished T21 at a very tough BMW International Open. He has 4 top 10 finishes in his 9 starts, and should at least hang around and give you 4 days of scoring.
